The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is one of the most common English language proficiency tests for academic education taught in English.
It is recognized by over 9,000 organizations worldwide. These include over 2000 universities in the U.S. and a vast number of universities in Australia, Canada, UK, New Zealand, Ireland and South Africa. Even more, it is also recognized by different professional organizations across the world.
The universities, often, demand an IELTS score of 6 or 7. They may even expect a minimum score in each of the 4 Modules. Furthermore, the range of IELTS score accepted in universities varies largely from one country to another. The acceptability criteria for different countries is as given below:
Over 300 institutes in Canada accept IELTS. If you are applying under SPP (Student Partners Program) or Non-SPP for undergraduate course/ degree program, there is a requirement of an overall 6 bands in IELTS with no less than 5.5 bands in each module. And, in case you are applying for graduate courses/ degree programs, you need overall 6.5 bands in IELTS with minimum 6 bands in each module. There are many popular universities under SPP namely British Columbia, Ontario, Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba.
If you are seeking an Australian visa, you need to demonstrate your proficiency in English to the Department of Immigration and Border Protection (DIBP). Almost every university or college in Australia accepts IELTS. There are many professional associations that have set minimum language requirements for professional registration.
You need overall 5.5 bands with not less than 5.0 in case you are applying for certificates, diplomas, and advanced diplomas. A Bachelor’s degree needs overall 6.0 bands not less than 6.0. For Graduate certificates, Graduate Diplomas, Masters Degrees, Research Programs overall 6.5 bands are required with not less than 6.0. Programs related to Dental, Pharmacy, Physiotherapy, Nursing require overall 7.0 Band.
Over 100 institutions in New Zealand accept IELTS. As is the case in many other countries, the international students need to demonstrate their English proficiency skills to the university/ college they are planning to apply in New Zealand. If you are applying for Diploma Program overall band requirement is 5.5 no less than 5.0. For Bachelors Degree and Graduate Diploma, the overall band requirement is 6.0. However, for Post Graduation the overall band is 6.5.
United Kingdom (UK)
When applying to colleges or universities in the United Kingdom, you are required to meet minimum English language level standards set by the institutions. For below degree level or session courses, there is a need for overall 4.0 bands. For Degree Level courses or more, you require 5.5 overall bands for your application to be successful.
United States of America (USA)
When applying for an undergraduate program, the overall band requirement is 5.5 to 6.0 bands along with SAT. However, the Masters of Science Engineering (Graduate) IELTS requires 6.0 to 6.5 and a GRE score of 300. For MBA, the IELTS requirement is 6.0 to 6.5 and GMAT score of 320 to 600.
The English language requirements may vary depending on the school and study program. The English language requirement for studying in Europe is 6.5 – 7.0 (IELTS) test score.
