In today’s time when almost everyone wants to implement the idea of becoming a digital nomad, what is the true significance of full-time employment?

Talk to employees and they will tell you, there are both pros and cons of full-time employment. While it can give you a sense of security, it can also make your growth stagnant and not allow you to advance your skill-set.

The best thing about working as a full-time employee is that you don’t have to worry about variations in your monthly earnings. A fixed amount of money is credited to your account on a weekly or monthly basis. If your performance is up to the mark and you manage to perform all your duties; you are safe and you don’t have to worry about your earnings.

Sanctioned Leaves

As a full-time employee, you’re entitled to receive sick leaves and a fixed number of paid leaves every year. It is not same with freelancers or part-time workers as the basis of your paid leaves is the number of hours for which you’re employed. You can, therefore, easily plan your holidays and take time off from work without having to worry about losing money.

Working Schedule

Your working schedule is fixed with specified working hours. Even though the employers are increasingly offering flexibility at workplaces, your working schedule more or less remains the same. When there are predefined working hours, you have much more stability in your professional life and can maintain a healthy work-life balance.

Career Growth

When you’re working in an organization as a full-time employee, there are many chances for you to make a steep growth in your career graph. There will be many advancement opportunities for you as the company has a vested interest in offering promotions to you since you’ve been associated with them for a long time.

Another major advantage of being a 9-5 employee is that you get all insurance benefits like health, disability, life, etc. There are companies that offer family coverage as well. Such benefits can significantly help in reducing your expenses.

Cons of Full-time Employment

Stagnant Work

The full-time job in one organization can make you stagnant. You get so much used to your workplace, salary, and type of work that you don’t even think about switching a job or looking for better opportunities in your profession.

It gets worse when you’re made to perform same tasks every day. You hardly get time or motivation to expand your skill-set and diversify yourself into other careers.

No Time to ‘Find Your Thing’

When you’re a full-time employee in an organization, you’re given a complete job description and are made to work in a cubicle. There is no scope for you to explore other areas of work. It could be that you’re really passionate about something else and can do wonders in that field. But you don’t get that environment or opportunity to find that ‘thing of yours’ that makes you unique and can help you realize your true potential.

Versatility Missing in Your Resume

When you’re in the same job for a long time, your resume might get affected drastically. In today’s time, employers look for candidates who have diverse experiences and versatile skills.
