Prime Minister Johnson’s new Government has brought much-awaited good news for the international students. The Government has decided to re-instate the two-year post-graduate work visa which was abolished seven years back by the Home Secretary Theresa May in 2012.
This new announcement for the “graduate route” will allow international students to work or to search for jobs after completing their studies. A student of every skill level can apply for jobs in the UK for a period of two years. There is no upper limit on the number of international students who can apply for this program.
This noble move by the UK government is welcomed by international education fraternity and applauded by Indian coteries. This post covers all the new rules, eligibility criteria and other conditions for getting boarded on this graduate route to the UK.
What is PSW Visa?
Post-study Work Visa is special visa permission given to international students after completing their course in that country. This permission allows the students to stay legally in that country to work or seek job opportunities. The tenure of this special visa permission differs from country to country.
UK’s Post Study Work Visa New Rules
The new graduate route would be applicable for international students from the academic year 2020-21. All the students who have a valid immigration status are eligible for this new immigration route. This two year PSW Visa is applicable to all the overseas students who have completed their undergraduate degree or higher from any recognized university in the UK.
This PSW Visa would be availed by the students who are enrolling for the session 2020-21. Also, the students who are currently undergoing any program completing in 2020-21, would also be eligible to avail this new graduate program.
This initiative by the UK government would allow talented international students to study, get work experience and invaluable knowledge from the UK market. Right now, this new graduate program is only applicable to STEM (Science, technology, engineering and Maths) courses. Things are still unclear about management courses.
The new rules will soon be updated on the UK government official website.

A Bite from the History
The UK has always been one of the much south-after study destinations by Indian students. The presence of reputed and internationally accredited universities attracted talented international students to taste the bite of the cherry.
Until in 2012, some tough calls were taken by the UK government which made the trend to decline. The reason was the abolishing of the PSW Visa. Most of the Indian students backed out at that time and opted for other destinations.
The reintroduction and implementation of post-study work visas would strengthen the numbers. Apart from this, it will give a strong boost to international enrolments in UK Universities.
The students must note that this two-year period is non-extendable. For settlement, the immigrants need to switch to skilled work after gaining sufficient work experience. All those students graduating before 2020-21 or whose visa is expiring will not be eligible for this program.
The UK government is very positive in this regard and hopes that the number of international students will rise in the coming years.
